A wonderful yet challenging tour, which promises a day of authentic high-altitude enduro riding, with a section of portage.
We start at the Julierpass (2284 m), reached by a shuttle service taking just over an hour.
From the pass, a short descent on an easy trail will take us to the village of Bivio, where we begin our first climb of the day. After about 6 km on a dirt road, we reach the Septimer Pass, one of the oldest and most important communication routes between the north and south of the Alps.
The first part of the descent will in fact take place in sections along the ancient Roman mule trail and in sections on fast single track, alternating with some more demanding passages where our technical skills will be put to the test!
Once we reach the valley floor of the Val Maroz, we climb up a stretch of dirt track which then becomes a path and from here we have to walk a few sections to reach the Maroz Dent Alpine pasture.
But the serious portage is yet to come! After about 50 minutes of shouldering our bikes we reach the small pass with the beautiful Lagh da Cam.
Yet, the most spectacular sight facing us is the truly unique view of the Badile and Cengalo peaks, of world-class mountaineering importance.
With this unique landscape as a backdrop, we set off down the longest descent of the day: the first part is a natural trail in a high-altitude alpine environment, the middle part particularly steep and technical with several tight hairpin bends, and the final but much faster part through beautiful pine undergrowth, leading us to Vicocoprano.
From here our descent takes us through the entire Bregalia valley along single-track and dirt roads, through typical Swiss hamlets, before crossing back into Italian territory and reaching Chiavenna.
